I met Viva at Lui's surfshop at Katipunan. Lui and Jong were in the middle of shaping a longboard. I love the place, surfboards everywhere, surf magazines strewn about, Kage with her laptop working on her recent surf photos, Carlo and other random surfers boozing. We were drinking Red Horse (the beer that kicks like a horse) while sitting on beanbags facing the highway. We rode with Philip, Gabby and Gabo. Viva slept through the entire trip, oblivious to the Bob Dylan and other great music blaring inside the pick-up truck. Not even half-way through the drive, Philip started passing this huge coke bottle spiked with Tanduay, an occult drink that causes hallucinations and alters sensory experiences. Not for the wuss. If the surfers in Fiji have the cava, the Filipinos have "Tanduay". Saturday, the waves were quite big and there was a surf exodus. It seems like the entire population of Manila drove to La Union for surf. I had a series of scary wipeouts, I dented Kali's board, and managed to hurt myself when my board smacked my legs and left me a huge bruise. Viva spent the whole day in the water, I'm convinced she was a mermaid in her pastlife. During sunset, my leg was hurting so I opted to stay out of the water and hang out in the beach instead. Loud music was playing in anticipation of a big party that night. We were dancing silly at the beach while the kids were merrily playing with the sand. Kuya Chu and Aten Yen made us a pleasing dinner, after which we promptly hit the kubo (nipa hut) with a case of red horse! I met a surfer from Iceland, who also did cross country skiing, motocross, a blacksmith and would probably do tuna bashing if they have tuna in Iceland. He taught me how to say "XXXX is hung like a horse" in Icelalandic. My goal is to say this phrase in at least a hundred languages. He asked me how to say it in Tagalog and I had a hard time traslating it. Why is it that it's always harder to say dirty language in your mother tongue? We had a deep connection by this time that if this was in the movies, we would have professed undying love to each other and promised to meet at the Eiffel Tower at 3 AM exactly one year after that night. Well this is the real world, so we ignored each other the next day when he walked by while I was playing frisbee with his friends.
