Just last week the entire country was in a high when Manny "The PacMan" Pacquiao proved, yet again that the Filipinos excel in gangsta sports. Yes, we standout in boxing and billiards, sports that involves betting and the occasional driveby shooting. That does not make me any less proud though. That's right, I'm a Filipino! Don't mess with me, I have nasty right! Sadly though, the holiday spirit and the Pacquiao elation (I reckon that during the Sunday match everyone skipped church and there was zero crime rate in the entire country) were superseded by the sad events that followed Reming. Hundreds are dead and hundreds more are missing, yet again the country is in a state of calamity. I'm amazed though how good-hearted the world is. Jacques Chirac sent a handwritten letter of commiseration. Foreign aids from Japan, Spain, Australia, the UN, ADB are pouring in. I get concerned e-mails and text messages from nice friends. My office is trying to arrange something to help the victims of the mudslides. It's amazing how the worst of times bring out the best in people.
