My sister teaches Grade 2 students at a public elementary school in a small village. I salute her dedication. She gets paid little yet she goes to school every day hoping that these kids will learn to read and write, and someday this will help them move out of poverty. Stories from her class...
One day, she noticed that one of the studet's leg had a huge gaping wound and remained untreated. No one at his home noticed the wound, his mother is a maid taking care of other children abroad and his father drives the tricycle for a living.
The top student missed one important exam because her parents separated. Her mother pointed a knife to his father. Apparently the mother was tired of living with her husband. He was always drunk, out of work and abusive.
Some students skip school because they have nothing to eat. Others have to go home after the morning session so they could help their parents make money.
And this government is asking for loose change to finance basic education!
